Book: Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
Character: Richard Mayhew
Personality: Richard is a pretty decent guy. Sure he's been naive in the past, sometimes he's a little eager to please, and he's not always the best guy to have around in a crisis... but his heart is always in the right place, and he knows right from wrong. His life in London Below has definitely lifted his scepticism, and his ability to adapt has increased tenfold, though sometimes, like all humans, he gets a case of they 'why me?'s.
Things he doesn't like? He doesn't like being left out of the loop, being treated like a child, being physically uncomfortable or big scary things that go bump in the night, although living in the capital of big-scary-bumpy-things has lifted his tolerance somewhat. He likes a challenge, which is something he has only just discovered about himself, and he likes a cold pint, which is a rare treat.
He also has very mixed emotions for a certain pixie-cropped girl. Protective? Definitely. Attracted to? In a strange sort of way... Infuriated by? Do you even need to ask? At any rate, he's always there, even if sometimes he wishes he was elsewhere.
Physical Appearance: Dark curly hair, blue grey eyes and a 5 o'clock shadow, Richard was illuminated from a small paragraph midway through chapter twenty, so was taken from midnight in his own story. He's wearing jeans, an old grey jumper and no shoes.
Background: Richard was a young, naive, seemingly happy buisnessman, with a fiance, an apartment and a collection of troll dolls. His naturally generous nature was his downfall when he stopped one night to help an injured girl. That girl ended up being the Lady Door of Arch, and his encounter with her meant he was lost to the world he knew forever.
When Richard 'fell' out of reality into the world of London Below, he changed. Through multiple tests of strength, intelligence and character, he broke away from the yuppie sheep mold he had been living in and became more adaptive, more understanding and learned that he had the inner strength to do anything.
After defeating Croup and Vandemar, along with the Great Beast of London Below, Richard has been returned to his life above, but it he is starting to realise it is no longer where he truly belongs.
Woken Point: Halfway through Chapter Twenty.
Time in the Library: He's only just been illuminated, so he hasn't appeared in the Library yet.
